Roses are Red...

I've always wondered why roses are the "go to" gift for Valentine's Day. I can remember my mom getting roses from my dad when I was a kid, Valentine's flowers being passed out in high school, and even co-workers get bouquets on this special day... but why?
The myth still believed by people today is that the  Emperor Claudius the third outlawed marriage so that young men would enjoy join his army, but Priest Valentine would still conduct marriages in secret as he believed deeply in love. Claudius eventually found out about Valentine and had him sentenced to death for disobeying the law. While in jail Valentine fell in love with the jailor's daughter.  Their love was shortlived as his death sentence soon came up. Before he was beheaded, he gave the girl a note and one red rose, hence the very first Valentine which came flowers.
